Christine - they are quite handy. Got mine as a gift (8gb - Ipod Touch - 2nd generation) in late-July 2009. Nothing but fun and plenty of usage. The pricing on new ones has always seemingly hovered at $196 - 199 for new 8gb models (and up to $400 for the top models), but I noticed one or two places had the refurbished ones for about $140 - 169. I believe XS Cargo in B.C. had the refurb' models on for $140 - 169 or so within the past year. I saw the price and did a double-take initially ... as I was so used to seeing 196 - 199 for Best Buy, London Drugs, Future Shop, Visions, Wal-Mart, Apple Store, others.

Polly ^ ... they're alot of fun. So many various Ipod products on the market ... Classic, Nano, Shuffle, Touch, etc.

Wifi = pertains to wireless connectivity. Whether it be in someone's own house or suite, or unlocked access in the neighbourhood/building ... or at places like hotels/motels/Waves/Starbucks/McDonalds that offer free wifi access to the public. Basically allows you to log in and surf the 'web, check emails, update weather readings, etc. Stuff like that.

I'm playing mine right now ... listening to a sports podcast from Las Vegas that I downloaded when I got home from the trip (which talked about the event we attended).

My mom and her sister each have 2nd Gen' Ipod Touches from early-2009.

I got my Ipod Touch (also a 2nd Generation model) in late-July 2009 as a gift.

When we got ours ... they were $197.99 - 199.99 + taxes + eco' fee.

They come in various models ... believe they're 8, 16, 32, and 64GB models.

One .MP3 song/file = usually in the area of 4 - 10mb
One GB (gigabyte) = 1000mb (megabytes)

So usually an album will be in the area of 50 - 120mb or so, depending on number of tracks & quality of audio conversion/compression. The shorter the songs and lesser the quality ... the smaller the overall album/folder size in regards to synching the songs/albums to one's Ipod Touch device.

Apple = www.apple.com/ipodtouch/
Wifi = en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi
Ipod Touch = en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ipod_Touch

They're great for playing music, podcasts (news/sports, etc) ... some quick web' surfing ... email, social networking, and a variety of apps (wide selection of helpful and fun freebies). The newer generation models have even more features that almost make them Iphone-like (minus the phone part). I helped my broher pick up a new model 8GB Ipod Touch (4TH generation) in Seattle in late-October. He got his for $229.99 at the Best Buy across the street from Northgate Mall. Good deal ... with the dollar being virtually at par of late, and there being no eco' fee/surchage, and lesser taxation. The same device would have been $249.99 + 12% HST + eco' fee/surcarge in Canada, as per all the pricing this fall at various stores.

Sometimes I've got 50 - 100 albums on the device (for the gym/work/etc) ... and other times I'll sync the device and have a handful of albums, and a ton of podcasts (all sports/music-related) lined up as I do now. I've got some 75 - 80 podcasts on there ... and they range from 30 mins - 2.5 hours + ... always a fun listen. It's my version of "satellie radio" in a way  - with a touch of emails, websurfin', Saveland, and sometimes I'll upload some .MP4 videos or videoclips on there as well.

Polly - thanks so much for the kind words. I broke it down the way I did for my parents and aunt. Explaining the file sizes and such (for .mp3 songs and such). The device itself is alot of fun. I just emailed my brother yesterday to ask him what he thought of his new 4th generation model. Hopefully he can let me know later this month. He already owns (from many years ago) the old Ipod Classic and Ipod Shuffle models, so this was a nice upgrade for him.

Polly - what I also find very handy (especially with tech goods) is punching in the model number on Youtube or Google. Works really well, say ... if you spot something in a flyer (phone/television/microwave/car stereo/dvd player, etc) and are curious as to customer reviews or peoples' tech reviews of them, etc.

When I was buying a new television set for myself in March 2009 ... I looked over prices/deals & general specs on sets, before deciding on a 40" Samsung. It's the SAMSUNG LN40A650 model. Which basically means the "650" model (6-series) of the 40-inch sets for their LCDs. So I typed that in on Youtube and got some other peoples' tech/video reviews of the model, which was neat. I sometimes do that for goods I'm interested in ... and did so with the Ipod Touch last year to see what it was all about, and also checking out Apple's site itself.

Polly ...

I also mentioned to my bro' I felt he got a good deal.

SEATTLE = $229.99 + 5% tax (if I remember correctly)

Whereas if he'd bought it locally in Vancouver, it would have been:

$249.99 + 12% tax + eco' fee/surcharge.

Christine,

Sounds good. Are there any good Black Friday deals in your region? I'm not sure what our sales are like here in Canada compared to the American Thanksgiving sales they get down in the States. * If you do indeed buy an Ipod Touch ... keep an eye on the pricing (or perhaps if you get a giftcard at one of the electronics stores to put towards it). IF you see them in the low-200s - then you're in for a bargain. Still seems to be hovering in the $249.99 + HST + eco' fee range for the bulk of Canada in recent months.

Their email newsletter notes this Friday (26th) = a special shopping event. 'Wrap it up this Friday' (doesn't appear to be any standout deals though) ... from 8am at any Apple Retail Store, or online all day.

Haven't heard back from my brother in Fernie, B.C. (by email) as to how he's liking his 4th generation Ipod Touch purchased a month ago. Hopefully he'll get back to me with some feedback, and I'll share that with you guys in this thread if/when he does.

Also - had a nice email/talk with my aunt recently. She was given (or win) a $25 ITunes giftcard within the past year, and had set it aside and misplaced it for some time. She was able to relocate it recently ... and she said she'll give it to me next time we're in touch. Gonna go and see a movie and grab a bite to eat soon. Very kind of her .... I think I'll put it towards buying 2 digital copies of cds, or perhaps a bunch of singles from a variety of artists.

As per usual - listening to the Ipod Touch as I type this (sports podcast from the Toronto region). Catching up on the Nov. 21st - 23rd shows, after listening to my Las Vegas-based sports shows yesterday.

The one thing my daughter would like for Christmas this year is an iTouch -- I think the 4th generation one with the 'face to face' talk feature. I have to decide whether to get the 8MB, 16MB or 32 MB. I will be in the U.S. next week so want to check the prices there before getting one here.

Leslie,

Yes ... Facetime.

When we were in Seattle this time last month, I don't quite recall the pricing on the larger models. Bro' stuck with the 8GB model (which is what my mom, aunt, and myself have with our older 2nd generation models from the first half of 2009). As for the 4th generation ... hopefully the price will drop come holiday/Boxing Day time. It's been $249.99 since its release in Canada, and was $229.99 (without the additional taxes + eco' fee) there in Seattle. We didn't get a chance to check the pricing in California and Oregon though, as he mentioned being keen on buying one in the final few days of the trip.
