Netbooks - anyone own?
Does anybody have a netbook? They seem to be getting more popular, so I'm wondering which brands you've tried and if they were reliable and sturdy?

Friend bought an LG he does not seem to have any problems with it. They work well for their described job. Just dont expect any barn burners. This is a long way from a laptop. One plus If it's stolen it can easily be a third the price of a laptop to replace. One complaint of the first gens were they could not perform well enough to watch a dvd plus lack of resolution . Supposedly the newer Nvidia onboard graphics chip solve these problems. And since these are perfectly sized to do this on an airplane it's a welcome function. Battery life is supposed to be it's forte. Over six hours is not a stretch but performance varies greatly. I check cnet for this kind of stuff. My choice would be an asus. But just like motherboards you have to do your research before you buy.

Thanks Wesley. I have gotten performance specs, I'm more worried that cheap devices will have failures, like hinges, batteries, etc.

Always tough to pay a bunch of money for an untested product.

My sister has one. It seems like a perfect product if you're not looking for a computer for anything more than basic programs. I personally wouldn't get one though.

I bought the laptop for using when travelling but we have stayed at home so far this winter so it is just sitting over there.

That's exactly why I have not bought a laptop. All that money just sitting there between vacations. Netbooks are cheap and small. If it's stolen, dropped or forgotten it's not as much concern as a $1200 laptop. If you can surf on an iphone this is a big step up.

How about this. The smaller one is the netbook.

I only spent $550 for my laptop. I used it on last trip and found it very usefull. Used to use the one available computer in the hotel but this was worth it to have something in the room.

I was told the netbooks were a lot slower than laptops.

They are, but really, if you're using it for surfing and other minor stuff like that, you don't need all that extra processing power. You can easily find one for at most $250 including taxes at major retail stores.
