Montreal Smoked Meat In The Deli

I see this in the deli meat counter in the stores and  wonder what this is. What kind of meat is this? Why Montreal? Is it made in Montreal?

I don't like smoked meat so have never bought it. But I still have questions.

Have you tried it? For sandwiches?

Montreal-style smoked meat, Montreal smoked meat or simply smoked meat in Montreal (French: viande fumée or du smoked meat), is a type of kosher-style deli meat product made by salting and curing beef brisket with spices. The brisket is allowed to absorb the flavours over a week, and is then hot smoked to cook through, and finally steamed to completion.
Although the preparation methods may be similar, Montreal smoked meat is cured in seasoning with more cracked peppercorns and aromatic spices, such as coriander, and significantly less sugar than New York pastrami.[1] The meat is typically served in the form of a rye bread sandwich slathered with mustard. While some Montreal smoked meat is brine-cured like corned beef, with spices applied later, many smoked meat establishments prefer dry-curing directly with salt and spices.

I buy it sometimes at Sobeys (which I think it is better here than at Safeway). Use it in sandwiches, good with mustard and rye bread. Enjoy!

Actually I've never bought it from a store, but while it's not exactly "health food", getting it at an authentic deli is a real treat.

I used to buy it occasionally. It is delicious on a kaiser bun or rye bread with mustard. I tend to stay away from the deli meats and all processed foods.

I first tried it when I was working in a restaurant & really enjoyed it! It's very tasty, especially on a good rye!

These comments have inspired me to try a free sample at Sobeys next time I am at their deli to see how I like it.
It does not seem so bad when I read the comments. LOL
