OTTAWA — Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq killed a government plan to impose strict limits on trans fats in food products that would have been in place by now, internal records show.
The announcement, set for the fall of 2009 with a two-year phase-in period, was needed "to protect all Canadians from high trans-fat intakes and to ensure there is a level playing field for industry," according to question period notes prepared for Aglukkaq in September 2009 in case opposition MPs grilled her about the issue.

Interesting. I don't know enough about it to really comment, but some foods really do need to have limits on them, or warning labels.

G'- agreed. Alot of the health issues in North America are brought on by diet.

Not good - dont understand the reasoning for this.
"Aglukkaq also rejected calls for stronger action on sodium by the provinces and the department's Sodium Working Group."

* If only there were coupons out there for fruits and veggies. In a perfect world ...

Evan--you are so right about the fruits/veggies coupons. I notice that when chips go on sale alot of times it is cheaper to buy in multiples. I wish the stores would make it cheaper to buy fruits and veggies when one buys in multiples.

Would this be the same government that is so keen on health care cutbacks? Hmmmmmmmm.

She / RB - Great points.
Speaking of coupons .... I was pleased of late to see some of the egg coupons out there. I had one for Buy 2 Dozen, Save $1 recently ... and I waited for eggs to go on sale and picked up some. The coupon was in conjunction with the Canadian egg farmers, or another such outfit. It was good to see.

I think there is too much government intrusion into people's lives. Now, there is a hullabaloo about taxing sugar or charging more for foods with sugar content. I think package labelling should be strengthened. Imagine the outcry from the health conscious public if they restricted alcohol content in spirits to 1%, 2% or 3.45%. There is only so much that they can do to get people eating responsibly. Good point on the coupons Evan. With you on that one.

Thanks, Tsetnoc.
Yeah - it's one of those things that often leaves you scratching your head. As with when studies have been done in North America in regards to poorer regions and neighbourhoods, and the number of fast food restaurants and corner stores, as opposed to grocery stores. Quick, convenient, and cheap ... but is it really when many items are marked up? You're paying for convenience and it's unsettling and unfortunate really ... my dad pointed out the number of times he's visited gas stations and seen people stopping in and buying a bunch of crap items ... and thought to himself - "For one ... that isn't healthy, and two ... the items are all overpriced. But hey ... it's quick and convenient."
