This is Quentin Tarantino's 8th film which is in current release now. Like all of Quentin's movies it is lengthy at just over three hours, but you never  lose interest. The plot is about two bounty hunters who are allies of convience and they end up in a snowbound sanctuary during a blizzard. There are other interesting persons already there, and then the fun starts. There are many surprising plot twists in this movie and as in all of Tarantino's films there is generous heaps of violence and use of ...

Salma Hayek is the star of this 2014 action "B"  explotation type movie. She plays the ex girl friend of a Japanese Mob boss who decides to have her killed. He sends various teams of hitmen and hitwomen to take care of this. The action all takes place in her apartment, where Salma's character, who has a great expertise in weapons, fends of the attackers, while trying to get her mother and daughter to safety. The film is very bloody and some the murders are, shall we say, a bit unusual, lol. If you...

Saturday Night Live alumni Tina Fey & Amy Poelher team up in this new comedy which is in wide release currently. They play two sisters with opposite personalities who hold one last party in their childhood home which their parents are selling. There are a few scenes which fall flat, but there are many laughs in this movie. There is a strong supporting cast of many funny comic actors and a few well know dramatic ones. It's like a mini SNL reunion. At the end of the day though Tina and Amy carry the movie on t...

Unknowns Simon Cotton and Kevin Leslie portray Reggie & Ronnie Kray, the famous brother gangsters who terrorized London in the 1960's in this independant British movie. It appears to be a low budget rip off of the current movie "Legend" and the 1991 cult movie "The Krays". Their is a real lack of production values in this movie, with nightclubs seemingly reduced to small rooms. A lot of the scenes are filmed in slow motion for no apparent reason at all. The violence is pretty intense, as ...

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson star in this 2015 comedy release. They play two salesman in their 40's who are fired from their jobs when the company closes. They end up in California as "interns" at Google with a bunch of brilliant university kids. Rose Byrne, Max Minghella, Josh Gad and Assiv Mandvi from the "Daily Show" co-star. Vaughn co-wrote the script and is a producer on this film. I found the plot quite predictable and it seems the movie is also one big commercial for Google. The funnie...

Samuel L. Jackson stars in this 2015 action movie as the U.S. President whose plane is shot down and crashes in northern Finland. He meets a young kid , played by Omni Tommila, who is on a overnight hunting trip. Together the two of them try to evade a group of terrorists who are out to capture the President. There is a veteran supporting cast of Britishers Jim Broadbent, Ray Stevenson, and Canada's Victor Garber as the Vice President. It's a pretty unbelieveable plot, but it's a very entertaining "...

This is a new well reviewed release which is playing in theatres right now. It's directed by Todd Haynes and stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.  The story takes place in 1952 New York City where a well off married woman with a young daughter meets a much younger clerk in a department store, and slowly they start to fall in love and start a lesbian affair. Eventually the husband played by Kyle Chandler starts a custody battle for control of the daughter. The two leads, Blanchett and Mara do excellent work...

This is a 2014 movie which details the mental illness of the Beach Boys Brian WIlson. Paul Dano pays the younger Brian in the 60's and John Cusack plays him in the 80's. Paul Giamatti portrays a psychiatrist who eventually manipulated Wilson to be under his control and mistreated him. Elizabeth Banks plays a car dealer who Wilson meets and eventually falls in love with and marries who helps him break free from the doctor. The cast is all excellent, and Banks shows a dramatic range I didn't think she had....

This is a 2013 "B" type exploitation comedy-action movie. The plot takes place 20 years in the future after an apocolypse where governments have collapsed and capitalist corporations rule most of the world. There is a resistance organization called the Council of Nine who hire bounty killers played by Christian Pitre and Matthew Marsden to fight back. The decapitations and body count may be among the highest I've ever seen, lol. Veterans Gary Busey and Beverly D'Angelo have small cameo roles. In ma...

This is a 2015 HBO movie which is a biography of 1920's - 1930's blues singer Bessie Smith. Queen Latifah plays the lead role wonderfully as a strong black woman who had a fascinating life. The film has a number of fine supporting actors from the television world such as Micheal Kenneth Williams from "Boardwalk Empire" who plays Bessie's lover, and Khandi Alexander from "News Radio" who plays an evil cousin who mistreated Bessie as a child.  They first started talking about makin...

Bryan Cranston of "Breaking Bad" fame stars as Dalton Trumbo, the famed screenwriter who was jailed for his political beliefs in the 1940's and was a vicitim to the blacklist. There is a fine supporting cast including Diane Lane, Helen Mirren, John Goodman, and suprisingly, the comedian Louis C. K. Many real life actors such as Kirk Douglas, John Wayne, and Edward G. Robinson are portrayed. This is an interesting look at a dark time both in the film industry and in American politics. The actors all are...

This is a new British movie which stars Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter and Brendan Gleeson.  It's a fictionalized story of the struggles of British women to get the vote in the early 20th century. Mulligan plays Maud Watts, a young married girl who has worked full time in a laundry since she was 12. The oppressive work conditions lead her to join the "suffragette" movement at a huge personal cost. Gleeson plays a Police Inspector who tries to get her to act as a spy on the movement. Meryl St...

Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell lead the cast in yet another adaption of a comic book from the Marvel enterprise. The story is about the formation of the team. Not being familiar with the characters or story, I found a lot of the origins of the team confusing. Also for an action film , they spend,  it seems two thirds of the movie discussing the formation and how they became super heroes before there is any real action.Fine character actors Reg E. Cathy and Tim Blake Nelson have suppor...
