Hayden Christensen and Emma Roberts star in this made in Toronto romantic comedy. They play the offspring of two feuding pizza shop owners in Toronto's "Little Italy", who were best friends as kids and are reunited when Emma Roberts's character returns to Canada after studying in London, England for the past five years. Of course romantic intrigue follows. Danny Aiello and Andrea Martin play the kids grandparents and Jane Seymour has a cameo as a London restaurant owner. This is an OK rom com if yo...

The fine Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgard stars in this 2014 Norwegian  language movie which is finally being shown in Canada. He plays Nils, a snowplow driver in a small village, who after the murder of his son decides to take revenge on the drug smuggling gang who had him killed. This is an unusal film, as there are many dry, humourous parts of it which will have you laughing. It's very similar to a Quentin Tarantino or Coen Brothers movie in this regard.  The fine German actor Bruno Ganz, has a very ...

"Belle" is an odd mixture of history and romance. It takes place in the 1800's just before the British Empire outlawed slavery. Belle is a mullato orphan being raised by her uncle, Lord Mansfield, who is the Lord Chief Justice of England. She is the illegitimate daughter of a Royal Navy officer and a slave. Newcomer Gugu Mbatha-Ray and the always dependable Tom Wilkinson star and give remarkable performances. Miranda Richardson, Emily Watson and Penelope Wilson co-star. The combination of romance and h...

British comedian Steve Coogan reprises his role from the popular TV show in this 2013 release. Alan Partridge has fallen to hosting "Mid Morning Matters" on a small radio station when it is taken over by a large conglomerate which plans to change the stations format. Chaos ensues when a fired DJ played by Colm Meany takes the station and some of it's staff hostage. Partridge is called in to help the police negotiate with Meany's character. You don't have to be a fan or familiar with the origina...

Veteran Stephen Frears directed this film which was nominated for four academy awards. Dame Judi Dench and Steve Coogan star in  this story about a journalist helping an elderly woman find out what happened to her son who was taken away from her in a convent in 1950's catholic Ireland. Dench certainly deserved her best actress nod . British comedian Coogan gives a remarkably restrained performance and also co-wrote the screenplay which was also nominated for an academy award. At 98 minutes, the time goes by...

This movie had a very small release in 2013, and is about the early years of the famous New York City punk bar "CBGB". On of my favourite actors, Alan Rickman plays Hilly Kristal, the owner, but in this case he is badly miscast. Canadian born Donal Logue plays Merv, Kristal's sidekick, and Malin Ackerman has a interesting cameo as Deborah Harry of Blondie fame. An interesting thing is they have actors portraying some of the famous acts such as The Police, The Ramones, Patti Smith, Talking Heads and Tel...

Danny Trejo, Anthony Micheal Hall and Mickey Rourke star in this 2012 straight to video western. The plot has Danny playing a gang leader who is betrayed and murdered by his associates after a robbery. He goes to hell and meets the devil played by Rourke who cuts a deal being that Danny has 24 hours on earth to kill the other members of the gang and bring their souls to him and he will be allowed to live. Of course much mayhem and violence follows ! It's a definite "B" type movie with cheesy di...

caught this one on wednesday thanks to a contest i won on facebook from eone films. the story is about a jailed NYC cop's efforts to clear his name. the plot is kind of unbeleivable, but it's helped by strong performances by sam worthington, elizabeth banks, and the always interesting ed harris. jaimie bell does very well also as the cop's younger brother. all in all, an entertaining action flick. i'd give it a 6 out of 10

Caught this last night at the Scotiabank Imax in downtown T.O.  the film per se was pretty bad with tom cruise's usual wooden performance and implausible plots. simon pegg has a humourous part as one of cruise's assistants which brought some much needed laughs to the proceedings. The good part is seeing it in IMAX which makes the stunts and the scenery far more interesting than on a regular screen.

saw this one today, as i was "rained out" and work was cancelled. i was thouroughly entertained and impressed by all the key performances. michelle williams, eddie redmayne & kenneth branagh are backed up by a superb supporting cast of familiar faces. as someone who works a lot in the industry, i was impressed by the scenes that took place on a film set.  this is one i highly recommend if you are a fan of fine acting
