Ben Stiller and Owen WIlson reprise their roles as Derek Zoolander and Hansel in this sequel to their 2001 hit. Co - written and produced by Stiller, the comedy has the duo working with Interpol's "Fashion Police" to try and find out the murderer of pop stars. Canadian Justin Bieber has a funny cameo at the beginning of the film. Penelope Cruz and Will Ferrell co star. There are a huge list of other performers making cameo appearances in the movie such as Katy Perry, Susan Boyle and scientist Neil DeGr...

This a romance - war movie which I do not think was shown in Canadian theatres. It is about a famous incident which happened during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930's : the German bombing of the defenceless town of Guernica. James D'Arcy plays a cynical US reporter who falls in love with a Soviet translator played by Maria Valverde. The Russian censor (Jack Davenport) also loves the translator, and is under pressure by the KGB to find a traitor. This is a smaller budget movie which really does not do justic...

A large ensemble cast of funny actors is largely wasted in this movie made for the holiday period. The weak plot is about a branch of a tech company in Chicago which is going to be closed unless they land a large client just before Christmas. They decide to hold a wild party to attract the client. The cast includes Jason Bateman, Olivia Munn, Jennifer Aniston, Kate McKinnon, Rob Cordry, T. J. Miller, Vanessa Bayer and Randall Park. Two directors and six writers collaborated on this film. There are a few laughs but t...

Bryan Cranston of "Breaking Bad" fame stars as President Lyndon B. Johnson in this movie taken from a Broadway play and shown on HBO earlier this year. It depicts Johnson taking office after the assination of John F. Kennedy until his triumph in the 1964 election and his struggle to get the Civil Rights Act passed despite fierce opposition from the racist southern senators and congressmen. Anthony plays Martin Luther King, Stephen Root is Edgar J. Hoover, Melissa Leo does an interesting job as Lady Bird Jo...

Canadian Denis Villneuve directs this science fiction movie in current release. The story is an interesting idea, Amy Adams plays a professor of linguistics who is recruited by an American army Colonel  played by Forrest Whittaker during a world crisis. 12 large structures from another planet have landed in different spots around the planet & Adams's character tries to find a way to communicate with them. Jeremy Renner co stars as a scientist. Filmed in and around Montreal, the movie is getting good rev...

Jessica Chastain leads an all star cast in this political thriller currently in theatres. She plays a Washington DC lobbyist who is fighting her former employer to get a gun control bill passed in the US Senate. Some of the great supporting cast are John Lithgow, Sam Waterson, Micheal Stuhlbarg, Jake Lacy, and Canadians Allison Pill and Chuck Shamata. Filmed in Toronto, the movie really shows how sleazy and corrupt the American political system can be. Chastains performance as Elizabeth Sloane is really good, and sh...

Ben Foster portrays disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong in this 2015 movie which gets into the details of his fall from grace in the world of cycling. Irish actor Chris O'Dowd plays London Sunday Times sports journalist David Walsh who uncovered the doping scandal in high level cycling which brought Armstrong down. The story is a bit esoteric for me, not being a follower of the sport, but I did learn some interesting facts. Jesse Plemons plays a team mate of Armstrong and Dustin Hoffman plays a risk insurer in a s...

Billy Bob Thornton recreates his role from the 2003 comedy as the drunken, self hating Willie for this sequel currently in theatres. This time him and his "little person" sidekick Marcus (Tony Cox) are reunited by his mother played by the amazing Kathy Bates to rob a charity on christmas eve. This is definitly not a Xmas type film. The jokes and language are quite dirty and bawdy. If you know Montreal , you will recognize many sites in the movie such as Place du Canada, the Sun Life Bldg. and Peel St. Mont...

A good cast are in this 2016 movie. Julianne Moore stars as a New Jersey police detective who meets, falls in love with and establishes a "domestic partership" with a young girl played by Canadian Ellen Page. Unfortunatly Juliannes character gets cancer and the story details the fight to give her benefits and pension to Ellen. Steve Carrell co stars as a gay rights campaigner and Micheal Shannon portrays a police officer. The plot is very predictable, but all the actors do fine work in the film. This is a ...

Kenneth Lonergan wrote and directed this new film which is currently playing in theatres. Casey Affleck stars as Lee, a man who is broken after the accidental death of his three kids in a fire. He is forced to return to his home town when his brother (Kyle Chandler) dies and he has to become the guardian of his 16 year old nephew (Lucas Hedges). This is a very moving and well written story with some fine acting. Michelle WIlliams plays Lee's ex-wife and there are also small excellent cameos with Gretchen Mol and...

This is a 2016 movie that I don't recall playing in theatres. Micheal Shannon plays the king of rock and roll and Kevin Spacey portrays the eccentric President of the United States. This is taken from the real life meeting of the two in the early 1970's. Shannon is great as Elvis and Spacey's Nixon is quite amusing also. The movie is more satirical than dramatic and the soundtrack gives the film a real '70s feel. Colin Hanks co-stars as White House assistant Bud Krogh and Alex Pettyfer along with Joh...

Daniel Radcliffe stars in this 2016 movie which is taken from a true to life story. He plays Nate Foster, an ambitious young FBI agent , who in order to get ahead, accepts a mission to infiltrate far right, neo nazi groups who are are planning domestic terrorism attacks similiar to the one Timothy McVeigh did in Oklahoma in the 1990's. This a very interesting film, especially with all the news about these groups operating now. Toni Collette plays Foster's boss in the FBI. It's interesting to me that the ...

We had advance passes to this new movie which opens in wide release across Canada tomorrow. Brad Pitt stars as a Canadian RCAF officer attatched to British Intelligence in the Second World War. On a mission to German occupied Morocco, he works with and falls in love with a French resistance fighter played by Marion Cotillard. After their mission they return to London where Cotillard's character falls under suspicion. There are some historical faults with the story, but over all this is an entertaining romance &a...

Canadian Ryan Reynolds returned to his home town of Vancouver to film this 2016 Marvel super hero movie. Although i am not a fan of this genre of film as a rule, I found this movie quite entertaining and funny. The director uses the tool of "breaking the fourth wall" and having Reynolds's character speak the audience directly. He is also very suited to the role of the sarcastic, quick witted anti hero. He even delivers a quip about the real life Ryan Reynolds, lol. The only members of the supporting ca...
